What is a Primitive Baptist?

To put it in the simplest form, Primitive Baptists are those who desire to simply follow the Bible and nothing else in all matters of faith and practice. In doing this they have a very high view of God in Creation, in Salvation, and in Providence. They believe that God deserves all glory and that man deserves none. They do not believe that God is ever frustrated or unsuccessful in anything He desires to do. He was successful in Creation. He made the universe the way He wanted to and rested on the seventh day because He was satisfied. He was successful in salvation. Not a single one of those for whom Christ died shall be lost. He is successful in His controlling providence. Even though it sometimes seems as if evil forces are in control, God is the ultimate victor. What the King of Babylon said about Him thousands of years ago is still true: “And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?” This belief does not make Primitive Baptists lazy in their faith. It rather animates them to do the very best they can in confidence they are serving the mighty King of the universe.

The conviction that the Bible alone must be followed also prescribes the way they conduct their worship services. They practice a capella congregational singing of hymns and spiritual songs, public prayer, and the preaching of the word of God. When they vigorously propagate the gospel in this land and in others they do so through the local congregations, thinking it not proper to use any organizational structure other than that which is strictly prescribed in the New Testament.

If it is in the Bible, we want it. If it is not in the Bible, we do not want it!
