I Surrender All
(Totally Yielding Our Lives To God)
Many times we convey deeply felt truths by the songs we sing. Several songs beautifully contain the truths we are trying to impart in this study. Please notice very carefully each word contained in these songs.
I
Surrender All
All to Jesus I surrender, All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him, In His presence daily live.
All to Jesus I surrender, Humbly at His feet I bow,
Worldly pleasures all forsaken, Take me Jesus, take me now.
All to Jesus I surrender, Make me Savior, wholly Thine;
Let me feel the Holy Spirit, Truly know that Thou art mine.
All to Jesus I surrender, Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power, Let Thy blessing fall on me.
Chorus
I surrender all, I surrender all, All to Thee my blessed Savior, I surrender all.

Have
Thine Own Way, Lord
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way! Thou art the Potter, I am the clay.
Mould me and make me After Thy will, While I am waiting, Yielded and still.
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way! Search me and try me, Master, today!
Whiter than snow, Lord, Wash me just now, As in Thy presence Humbly I bow.
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way! Wounded and weary, Help me, I pray!
Power, all power, Surely is Thine! Touch me and heal me, Savior, divine!
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way! Hold o'er my being, Absolute sway!
Fill with Thy Spirit Till all shall see Christ only, always, Living in me!

Thy
Way, Not Mine, O Lord
Thy way, not mine, O Lord, However dark it be;
O, lead me by Thine own right hand; Choose Thou the path for me!
Smooth let it be, or rough, It still will be the best;
Winding or straight, it matters not; It leads me to Thy rest.
I dare not choose my lot; I would not if I might;
But choose Thou for me, O my Lord! So shall I walk aright.
The Kingdom that I seek is Thine; so let the way
That leads to it, O Lord be Thine! Else I must surely stray.
Not mine, not mine the choice, If things be great or small;
Be Thou my Guide, my Guard, my Strength, my Wisdom, and my All!

Take
My Life And Let It Be
Take my life, and let it be Consecrated, Lord to Thee;
Take my feet, and let them be Swift and beautiful for Thee;
Take my silver and my gold, Not a mite would I withhold;
Take my will, and make it Thine, It shall be no longer mine;
Lord, I give my life to Thee, Thine forever more to be;
Lord, I give my life to Thee, Thine forever more to be.

Being
Yielded
2 Chronicles 30:8 Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers
were, but yield yourselves unto the
LORD, and enter into his sanctuary, which he hath sanctified for ever: and
serve the LORD your God, that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away from
you.
(Explanation: Do not be stubborn or obstinate like an ox, which being unaccustomed to the yoke, draws back from it, and will not submit to it. Yielding here means to be subject to or to "give the hand" (as a token of subjection and homage, or of entering into a covenant with him, promising for the future to serve and obey him).

Romans Six is vital to an understanding of what it means to be yielded to God. We will read the entire chapter and then concentrate on a few key verses. The following is an outline of verses 2-11, that I got from Elder Thomas Mann
The passage reveals that:
1) Jesus Christ died, was buried and rose again for our sins.
2) Saints, represented by Christ, died, were buried and resurrected in Him.
3) In regeneration this event is dramatized as the individual is made dead to sin, buried to the former life and resurrected to a new life.
4) This same pattern cycles through the life of the child of God via practical sanctification (dying out to self and being resurrected to newness of life from day to day.) See Galatians 5:16,17; Romans 7:15-25; Luke 9:23; Romans 8:13; Galatians 5:24.
5) Water baptism is a symbol of all this.
Romans 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
"Yield" means "to present, to place a person or thing at one's disposal."
By "members," is meant the various faculties of our souls and bodies.
"Instruments" is "tools or weapons."
"Yield yourselves unto God," means to present yourselves soul and body, to God. Give yourself up and devote yourselves to Him and to His service. Yield a cheerful obedience to Him.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
We are either at the beck and call of sin or the beck and call of righteousness. What is the general tenor of your life? Are you habitually obedient to God or to sin? This is a very serious question!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Romans 6:19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
Let the same members which have been employed in the service of sin, be made use of in the service of righteousness. Let your eyes be used to read God's word. Let your ears be used in hearing the gospel preached. Let your tongue be used in expressing praise to God and edifying others. See Hebrews 13:15 and Ephesians 4:29. Let your hands be used in useful ways and providing for the necessities of the saints. See Ephesians 4:28. Let your feet be beautiful for the
Lord.
Be a willing, obedient, cheerful, servant of the Lord. Be at His beck and call. Wait upon Him as a good servant. See Psalm 32:8,9.

Submission
James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
The word, "submit" means "to be subject to, to arrange under, to subordinate, to submit to one's control, to yield to one's admonition or advice. It was a Greek military term meaning "to arrange troops in a military fashion under the command of a leader." In non-military use, it was "a voluntary attitude of giving in, cooperating, assuming responsibility, and carrying a burden."
John Gill has a very beautiful comment of this verse:
Ver. 7 Submit yourselves therefore
to God, &c.] To the will of God, with
respect to worldly things, and be content with such things as are enjoyed, and
be satisfied with the portion that is allotted; it is right and best for the
people of God to leave themselves with him, to choose their inheritance for
them, since by all their anxious cares, their striving and struggling, their
impatient desires, wars and fightings, as they cannot add one cubit to their
stature, so nothing to their worldly substance; and it becomes them to submit
to God in all afflictive dispensations of his providence, and be still and know
that he is God; as well as to submit to his way and method of salvation by
Christ, and particularly to the righteousness of Christ, for justification; and
to depend upon him for supplies of grace in the discharge of every duty, and
the exercise of every grace:

Waiting
Psalm 27:14 Wait on the LORD: be
of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
John Gill says on this verse:
It becomes believers to wait on the Lord for the common blessings of life, for even the eyes of all wait upon him for their daily food; and for the light of his countenance, when it is withdrawn from them, for he will return again at the set time; and for answers of prayer, which will be given sooner or later; and for the performance of his promises, which are yea and amen in Christ: they should wait upon him in his house and ordinances constantly, with reverence and godly fear; they should wait upon him as servants on their masters, observe his orders, and diligently execute them; and, as beggars for their alms, they should knock and wait at Wisdom's gates, tell their case and wait, take repulses and wait, and, when they succeed, give thanks. It is good to wait upon the Lord; many are the favours and blessings such receive now, and eye has not seen what God has prepared for them that wait for him;

"Wait" means "to be silent, be still, be dumb."
_____________________________________________________________________________
A good prayer is recorded in Psalm 25:3-5.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Psalm 62:1 Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.
Gill's comments on this are good:
Ver. 1. Truly my soul waiteth upon
God, &c.] In the use of means, for answers
of prayer, for performance of promises, and for deliverance from enemies, and
out of every trouble: or "is silent"; not as to prayer, but as to
murmuring; patiently and quietly waiting
for salvation until the Lord's time come to give it; being
"subject" to him,; resigned to his will, and patient under his
afflicting hand: it denotes a quiet, patient, waiting on the Lord, and not
merely bodily exercise in outward ordinances; but an inward frame of spirit, a soul waiting on the Lord, and that in
truth and reality, in opposition to mere form and show; and with constancy
"waiteth", and "only"
on him. from him cometh my salvation; both temporal, spiritual, and eternal, and not from any
creature; the consideration of which makes the mind quiet and easy under
afflictive provide uses.
Psalm 62:5 My soul, wait thou only
upon God; for my expectation is from him.
Ver. 5. My soul, wait thou only
upon God, &c.] Be silent and subject to
him, acquiesce in his providences, rest in him patiently and quietly, wait for
his salvation; perhaps some new temptation might arise, and David's soul began
to be uneasy and impatient; for frames
are very changeable things; and therefore he encourages it to be still and
quiet, and patiently wait on the Lord and on him only: for my expectation is from him; or "my hope", the grace of hope is from the
Lord, and the thing hoped for is from him; he is the author and the object of
it; and his word of promise encourages to the exercise of it; or "my
patience". The grace of patience is from the Lord; the means of it is his
word; and it is exercised, tried, and increased by afflictions sent and
sanctified by him; and "expectation" is nothing else than these
graces in exercise, a waiting patiently for things hoped for Old Testament
saints expected the first coming of Christ; New Testament saints expect his
second coming; and all expect good things from him in time and eternity; nor
shall their expectation fail and perish; and therefore is a reason why their
souls should wait only on the Lord.

Psalm 123:2 Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the
hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her
mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon
us.

Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait
upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as
eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Here, again, John Gill has some
beautiful comments:
Ver. 31. But they that wait upon
the Lord, &c.] As children on their parents, to do them honour, to obey their
commands, and receive food and blessings from them; as servants on their masters, to know their pleasure, do their work,
and have their wages; and as beggars at
the door, who knock and wait, tell their case and wait, meet with repulses,
yet keep their place, and continue waiting: such an act supposes a knowledge
and reverence of God, confidence in him, attendance on him, not with the body
only, in public and private, but with the soul also, and with some degree of
constancy, and with patience and quietness: the Lord is to be waited upon for the manifestations of himself, who
sometimes hides himself, but is to be waited for, since he has his set time to
show himself again, and his presence is worth waiting for; also for the performance of his promises,
which may be expected from his perfections, the nature of the promises, and
their being in Christ; likewise for
answers of prayer, and for the fresh
discoveries of pardoning grace and mercy; and as Old Testament saints
waited for the first coming of Christ, so New Testament saints for his second
coming, and for eternal glory and
happiness: and such "shall renew their strength"; which is to be
understood of spiritual! strength in the heart, and of the graces of the Spirit
there: it supposes strength received already, which natural men have not, but
converted men have; and yet they want more, and more they shall have; to assist
them in the performance of duty, to enable them to resist Satan and his
temptations, and the corruptions of nature, and to cause them to endure
afflictions and persecutions patiently, and to persevere unto the end: they shall mount up with wings as eagles; swiftly and strongly; it is expressive of the motion of
the affections heavenwards towards God and Christ, and things above; of the
entrance of faith and hope within the veil, and of the exercise of these graces
on Christ, who is now at the right hand of God; of the expectation of glory and happiness in heaven hereafter, and of
present support under afflictions, the Lord bearing them as on eagles'
wings; they shall run, and not be weary; in the way of God's commandments; which shows great
affection for them, haste to obey them, delight and pleasure, cheerfulness and
alacrity, therein, so as to be without weariness and they shall, walk, and not faint.

Present
Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the
mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy,
acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
The word "present" here means "to provide; to place a person or
thing at one's disposal."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The Opposite
The opposite of being yielded is
to be stubborn and rebellious.
See I Samuel 15:23. Proverbs 1:
24-33; 5:12; 15:32; 29:1.

Closing Thoughts
1.
Ask God to break your will.
When you break a horse to make him useful you have to restrict his movements
and master him.
2.
God uses those whom He has
broken and trained. What can we learn from the lives of men like Joseph and Moses?
3.
We must lay everything at the
feet of Jesus. We must put everything on the altar and hold nothing back! To do anything less is to play games and to
tempt God.
4.
We must be live pliable clay in the hands of the Divine Potter.
Trust
and Obey
When we walk
with the Lord in the light of His Word, what a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His
good will, He abides with us still and with all who will trust and obey.
Not a shadow can
rise, not a cloud in the skies, but His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt nor
a fear, not a sigh nor a tear, can abide while we trust and obey.
Not a burden we
bear, not a sorrow we share, but our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief nor
a loss, not a frown nor a cross, but is blest if we trust and obey.
But we never can
prove the delights of His love until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He
shows, and the joy He bestows, are for all who will trust and obey.
The in
fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet, or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we
will do, where He sends we will go, never fear, only trust and obey.
Chorus
Trust and obey,
for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus than to trust and obey.
