A Thought From the Word
“The Lord is in His holy temple, the Lord’s throne is in heaven: His eyes behold, His eyelids try, the children of men.” Psalm 11:4
The beauty of this verse must be seen in light of the previous verse where a heavy-hearted David said, “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” If David felt key foundations being eroded in his day, surely the same is happening in ours. Nations that once were heavily influenced by Christian thought and values have turned completely in the opposite direction. Those who have been shocked by the death of loved ones may feel as if their foundations have been shaken. The same with those who have lost their jobs.
What can the righteous do in such discouraging times? They can and must do what David did. They must remind themselves of the fact that God is still ruling and reigning upon His heavenly throne. The truth is, He was ruling before the foundations were destroyed and He still is after they have collapsed. God is not weakened, discouraged or overwhelmed by the affairs of men. He never has dark days of doubt and fear. He holds the future as well as the present in His hands.
God does all of this while having a holy desire for His own glory and a perfect love for His precious children. It is not as if His sovereignty causes Him to be un-feeling towards those for whom He sacrificed His beloved Son. He knows their heart-aches, their fears and their burdens. Ultimately, He knows what they need, and how they can experience and glorify Him in a deeper way. Some foundations may be shaking, but God is not!
