"And when Peter saw it, he answered
unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? Or why look ye so
earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to
walk?" Acts 3:12
The setting of this statement is when Peter
healed a man as he and John were walking to the Temple. After the event, a
large crowd gathered and were struck with amazement at what had just happened.
This would have been a perfect opportunity for Peter to put the spotlight on
himself, if that was what he wanted.
Rather, this verse and the
following sermon that Peter preaches is focused purely on Jesus Christ. Peter
recognized that he had not done this great act by his own power, but by Jesus
Christ. Our fallen human nature loves the praise and admiration of men. On this
occasion, however, Peter was blessed to put the spotlight where it always
belongs: on God.
When you are blessed of God to do something good, where does the spotlight go? Do you enjoy focusing it on yourself, even for a just a moment? Or, does your heart want it to be only on Him. May God help us all to give all glory to God.
